Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was pictured smoking in his convertible last week, the same car he used to take Taylor Swift out on a date. Kelce smoked while checking his phone in his 1970 Chevelle convertible, just days before suffering an injury while out on the field.
The Chiefs continued their winning streak on Sunday with a 27-20 win over the Minnesota Vikings, but for the second time this season, Kelce suffered an injury.
Kelce missed the entirety of Week 1 as the Chiefs lost against the Detroit Lions, but only missed a portion of their Week 5 win and he even managed to score a touchdown. The Chiefs are unbeaten with Kelce this season, but they face a late fitness test to determine his status ahead of Thursday night.
The Chiefs play the Denver Broncos on Thursday and Kelce has been listed as questionable, after missing practice on Monday and engaging in limited activity on Tuesday and Wednesday. It’s not known exactly what Kelce was smoking, but the 34-year-old has never tried to hide his support for the legalization of marijuana.
Kelce guessed that between 50 and 80 percent of NFL players smoke marijuana, and the league abandoned offseason testing for the substance this year. Aaron Rodgers has also spoken about his support for certain substances and has even been hit with the nickname “Mr. Ayahuasca” in recent years.
The NFL used to discipline players for returning 35 nanograms of marijuana in their system, but in 2021 it was increased to 150 due to the legalization in certain states across America. Kelce gave a recent assessment of players’ offseason habits, and how they get around the testing.
“If you just stop in the middle of July, you’re fine,” Kelce said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “A lot of guys stop a week before and they still pass because everybody’s working out in the heat and sweating their tail off. Nobody’s really getting hit for it anymore.”
Whatever Kelce’s habits are, it hasn’t affected his or the Chiefs’ season too much. They’re 4-1 after bouncing back from their Week 1 defeat, and still one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl again.
The tight end also has three touchdowns this season in just four games, although his stats show he is performing below average. Kelce’s average yards per reception have fluctuated between 12.2 and 13.5 throughout his career, but he’s currently on an average of 8.2 this season.
Kelce is still scoring though which is the only real stat that matters for an offensive player, and he will be crucial to any success this season. Swift may finally be at the Super Bowl after rejecting offers for the halftime show, although it could be just as a Chiefs fan.
